The Tillman Story: The Mystery and the Cover-Up

I recently attended a showing of the film, “The Tillman Story.”  This film, about the death of Army Ranger Pat Tillman, was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival.
As many of my readers know, in 2002, Pat Tillman gave up his lucrative career in professional football, to join the Army.  While on duty in Afghanistan, in 2004, Tillman was killed by friendly fire.  As described on the film’s official website, “And when the government tried to turn his death into propaganda, Continue reading

Republicans Vow to Repeal Health Care Reform

The House of Representatives Republican Whip, Eric Cantor, has vowed to lead the Republicans in an effort to repeal the landmark health care legislation that was passed by Congress earlier this year.  Since President Obama would certainly veto any repeal of the full legislation, Cantor indicated that the Republicans would attempt to use spending bills to enable them to block the implementation of various components of the health care reform.  As reported by the New York Times, Cantor stated, “If all of Obamacare cannot be immediately repealed, then it is my intention Continue reading

Radioactive Waste? No Thanks!

The Nuclear Information and Resource Service (NIRS) is circulating an important petition that I want to make my readers aware of.  The petition calls for a national policy based upon four essential principles concerning the production, transportation, and storage of radioactive waste.  On November 16, NIRS will present the petition, along with quite a bit of documentation, to the Obama Administration’s Blue Ribbon Commission on America’s Nuclear Future.
NIRS summarizes the principles presented as follows: Continue reading

It’s Veterans Day. Let’s Support the Troops, Not the Wars.

Many of us followed the midterm election campaigns pretty closely.  Not too many of us, however, heard much mention of the wars we are fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan.  This was terribly unfortunate, but not really surprising.  Neither the Democrats nor the Republicans had much to gain by raising the issue.  I find this insulting to the troops.  They risk their lives daily.  They are entitled to the knowledge that our country is having an open discussion of the wars.  They deserve to know that we are doing all that we can, to get them home as quickly and as safely as possible.
Now that the elections are over, we are hearing a bit more about the wars.  The New York Times recently reported that some Republicans may argue Continue reading

Nuclear Power? Still, No Thanks!

There was an explosion this week, at the Indian Point nuclear power plant, about twenty-five miles north of New York City.  Officials in the four surrounding counties opened their emergency response centers, in case a regional evacuation was necessary.  Indian Point Reactor Number 2 was shut down.  The explosion occurred in a massive transformer, weighing about 900,000 pounds.  Thankfully, there was no leakage of radioactive materials, and no on was hurt.  For more information, click here.
Also this week, in Vernon, Vermont, Continue reading
